Psychologists play an important role in helping people cope up with their emotions, behaviors, and managing them to lead a peaceful and happy life. The role of a psychologist is essential in all phases of human life, right from mentoring a school kid to concentrate well on studies to counseling a senior citizen who is dealing with loneliness. Every individual, however mentally strong they are - at times they need a shoulder to lean on.

What is psychology?

Psychology in simple terms is the study of mind and behavior which encompasses the factors that affect how people think, feel and act. A healthcare professional trained in psychology is known as a psychologist. A good grasp of psychology can help people achieve better understanding of others as well as their own actions. Psychology aims to understand individuals by establishing general principles that explore personality, cognition, attention, emotion, behaviour and many other aspects of humans. Due to psychology being a broad and diverse field, many different subfields and speciality areas have emerged within it. Some of the major types of psychology includes:

  • Social Psychology

  • Personality Psychology

  • Cognitive Psychology

  • Development Psychology

  • Biological Psychology

While psychology deals primarily with mental health problems, it is not the only scope. It is also led towards understanding and identifying problems in several phases of human activity. They also work in industries like, education, health, media, marketing, product designs and human relations.

What do psychologists do?

In psychology, a professional practitioner or researcher is called a psychologist. They are also referred to as social, behavioural, or cognitive scientists. Psychologists help people cure and overcome mental distress and psychological illness. They use principles, clinical findings and research to help their clients improve themselves psychologically. Psychologists are trained in understanding the different factors that can impact human actions and behaviour, motivating them and them and helping them improve their productivity and achieve their goals.

Why do we need a psychologist?

Psychologists are people specially trained to treat people with anxiety, depression, stress. etc. psychologists are very well trained in how to handle them because generally, people with anxiety are too fragile and they break easily. Those people need to be handled very carefully as they would either become more depressed or too ferocious. Psychologists change their approach depending on the state of the person.

In some cases where people are mentally affected may be due to a loss of their loved ones (or) due to the state of being alone they just require verbal counseling. Some conditions where they are mentally tortured may be due to physical violence (or) a traumatic event, will be treated with counselings/therapies as well with the help of medications.

Overstress and depression might lead to health conditions like heart diseases. These conditions can only be identified and treated with the help of a healthcare professional like a psychologist.

If you think just sitting with them and asking about what's bothering is what psychologists do, then you're wrong. Psychologists are not just listeners they listen, analyze, and treat. There are many cases like depression due to improper sleep, stress due to pain caused by improper health conditions, etc. Only by knowing the root cause of an issue, the condition can be treated. Psychologists change their way of approach depending upon the person and the condition. Some people will just feel right in a counseling session, whereas the others would need a therapy (or) medication.

How do psychologists comfort patients?

There are various ways by which psychologists comfort patients. For example if a person is dealing with anxiety issues, psychologists undergo CBT - ( Cognitive Behavioural therapy). This particular therapy works on recognising the thought process of the person that leads to anxiety. If the person has developed a fear of something, the psychologist tries to recognise their thought  process and change it into a positive thinking. Teaching them a few relaxation techniques like breathing exercises, medication, etc. which will give them a peace of mind.

They try to put reasonable justification to create a positive impact which gives hope to the affected person.
