The Unsung Heroes of Covid -19 - A tribute to Nurses

The virus that broke out from nowhere became a global pandemic, putting the human race in danger. while the whole world stayed inside the home to protect and safeguard them from the virus, healthcare professionals had to step out to protect the globe putting their own lives in danger.

 

As the number of covid cases advances to increase across the globe, the part of nurses and other health expert staff shifts increasingly critical in regulating the impact of the virus

 

 

The Role of Nurses in a Pandemic

 

The tremendous work of the Nurses in response to the countless number of cases around the Globe is phenomenal.

 

General Patient Care :

 

While researchers are working hard to find a vaccine for Covid in laboratories, healthcare professionals like doctors and nurses are fighting against Covid by directly dealing with the patients face to face. 

 

While the whole world was requested to stay inside their homes to ensure safety, the healthcare professionals were pushed to a situation where they have to put their profession in-front of their family. The nurses had to deal with a countless number of patients every day from testing them for Covid, till they are completely healed.

 

If an individual is tested covid positive, they need complete care right from timely temperature checks to proper diet maintenance. As the patients are filled with anxiety and fear, it is the responsibility of the nurse to keep them in a comfortable environment with all the requirements.

 

 Medical Supply Maintenance during the pandemic:

 

Coronavirus pandemic had led to a position where everything was put to a halt, if anything goes wrong over time there is no alternative. Nurses had a very huge responsibility of managing all the covid medical supplies, such as Face masks, hand gloves, sanitizers. etc

 

During the peak of corona transmission around the world, breathing equipment such as ventilators was scarcely available. Which pushed them to a very hard situation where youngsters were given first preference and the lives of senior citizens in danger.

 

Wearing PPE kit - a real challenge:

 

Proper sanitation at regular intervals of time is really important to ensure hygiene. Day-to-day medical supplies also need to be sanitized from time to time. Nurses are the major person who deals with the patient constantly, therefore PPE Kits are mandatory. Working with a PPE kit is not an easy task, the suffocation caused by it may also lead to serious issues. Therefore, nurses who are aged above 55 were requested to stay at home and only visit if the condition is unmanageable. Gradually overtime nurses were restricted to visit their homes as the situation was unpredictable and fear of infection passing onto their families was high.

 

The Dangers Nurses Face During A Pandemic

 

Infection:

 

Standing on the frontline of a global pandemic, all the nurses and other healthcare professionals are risking their own lives for the cause of the struggling nation. Even though they obey all the safety procedures and guidelines, it is really hard to follow them 24/7. Nurses are at high risk of acquiring the infection as they are in constant contact with the patients.

 

Physically and Mentally Exhaustive :

 

They had to work overtime - more than 20+ hours due to an unmanageable count of cases, which makes them physically and mentally exhaustive. They have to deal with a lot of stress which eventually makes them exhaustive. here are few points on how you can deal with this stress,

 

1 . Take short breaks:  Take short breaks in between stressful working hours. Remember you are not a robot or a machine to work endlessly, it is okay to take small breaks. Taking breaks in between stressful hours relaxes your mind and gives you a sense of peace.

 

2 . Do breathing exercises: Practice doing simple breathing exercises that help in managing the suffocation caused by the PPE kit. Breath- in and Breathe- out 5 -10 times every hour, which gives you a refreshed feeling.

 

3 . Maintain a proper diet: As far as possible make sure you consume immunity-boosting foods that will ensure proper health and will also provide the necessary energy for the day's run. Nurses/ healthcare professionals with other health issues, such as diabetes, low Blood pressure should maintain a proper diet and consume food at proper intervals of time. 4 . Have a proper intake of water: Keep yourself hydrated by consuming a lot of water preferably hot water. Consuming the proper amount of water will help you keep active throughout the day.

 

Amongst the struggles, stress, and risks involved, Nurses have done a tremendous job in battling against Corona. They risked their own lives and left their families alone so that we can be safe with our families. A huge salute to all the brave nurses out there battling against Covid-19.
